Bible Overview Booklet
Biblical studies have been mostly noted as one of the most complicated procedures that are subjected to several conflicts in the file of theological understanding. The different interpretations of the different religions with regards the theme of the Bible usually causes confusion among the followers of the Christian faith. Unfortunately, not everyone who wants to know the knowledge shared through the Bible is able to get the accurate knowledge that they intend to acquire from the Holy Scriptures.Although there are numerous assistance learning programs provided by the different religious churches in the world, there is still an assumed lack of understanding of the Bible among the majority of the population of people in the human society. This is the primary reason why the book of Max Anders entitled ââ¬Å"30 Days to Understanding the Bibleâ⬠Intends to suggest ways by which an individual could get the best gist of the biblical learning that is suggested by the Holy Scriptures.F rom this particular reading material, it could be learned that the key to understanding the Bible in a deeper manner is identified by an individualââ¬â¢s right disposition in thinking when reading the word of God. Through this right disposition, an individual would be able to utilize the understanding he has in understanding the Bible in a more complicated yet more practical way. (24) The chapters of this particular book directly points out the possibilities of an individualââ¬â¢s understanding of the Bible within the span of thirty days.It is not through word by word reading without deep understanding but through thematic comprehension that the author suggested an effective and progressive procedure of learning the entire message of the Holy Scriptures. In this particular writing, the author aimed to encourage everyone [Christian or Not] to think of the possibility that understanding the Bible within thirty days could bring an individual.Indeed, the authorââ¬â¢s stressing of the major benefits of learning the Bible states the fact that the Holy Scriptures and its theme is designed not for the olden time generation as perceived by other people, instead the pages of the Bible have been written for the sake of the past, the present and the future generations of humankind. To start the discussion with, learning the main themes of the Bible is essential to help the readers get the main idea and the right motivation in reading the Bible.I. The Bible and Its Theme The entire theme of the Bible is focused upon the establishing the Kingdom of God, loosing it and the plan of reestablishing it again. As for a fact, the 66 books of the Bible overall pertain to the purpose of God in creating the Earth for mankind. It could be noted that this idea has been particularly assured by the by the fact that major passages in the Bible discusses the truth behind the plans of God towards the future of humans.Although the Bible had been written for the past hundreds and hun dreds of years, examining it clearly shall prove the fact that the central theme of the Bible is practically applicable to all the different generations of the human civilization. Godââ¬â¢s holy Kingdom has been primarily established to give the humans a possibility to live the best lives they could as they are also expected to take advantage of the privilege given to them by their holy creator. The time when God lost the sovereignty of his rulership over the first humans Adam and Eve to the snares of the snake appearing to have been used by the devil as the personification of his voice ha been the reason why the issues on Godââ¬â¢s rightful rulership over humans has been questioned. More than that, humans started to suffer for the sake of simply being able to get through with the day. The original purpose of God for humans has been lost by the first partner of humans.Since then, God planned to give his primary purpose upon earth a certain fulfillment in the future. The plans h e had been making for the fulfillment of his purpose has mainly been the entire theme of the Holy Scriptures. As for a fact, the phrase ââ¬Å"Kingdom of Godâ⬠had been mentioned in the Bible for hundreds of times. II. Bible and the Human History (A Discussion on Creation and the Exodus) One of the primary starting points of explaining the plan was the written history of mankind. From the creation of the first partner of humans towards the coming of the promised messiah, the first centuries of the human history has been presented in the Bible with clear description of the things that the different characters of the past had primarily been dealing with during their era of existence. As 2 Timothy 3: 16 says: ââ¬Å"All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work. â⬠This pertains to the fact that the accounted written in the Bible basing form the History of mankind were written aforetime for the benefit of the generations to come which pertains to the present generation. The victories and the failures of the characters had been clearly outlined through the pages of the Bible. Unlike any biographical account books, the Bible gives a detailed description of the characters being discussed including their sins and the consequences of the said wrong doings so as to appeal to the generation that would read the said stories of the lives of the first century Christians.III. The Judges One of the most special sections of the Bible is the part where the procedures of judging the mistakes of the Israelites were given clear and accountable description. The Book of Judges primarily engraves the different principles followed by the Israelites during the olden times. Certainly, the impact of the book of Judges and the impact it has on the procedures of disciplining that true Christians should apply today is indeed strong and highly practical for application. It could be noticed form this particular book in the Bible, that the importance of clinging to the commandments of God is indeed an essential factor in becoming in ââ¬Å"onenessâ⬠with God. People who were not able to follow through were not given high regard by the Almighty Creator of all things. Instead, the consequences of their acts are easily coming upon them, enough to remind them of the fact that they have erred against God. His commandments are not like the ones that have been formed within the human set of laws. The limitations set through the principles of God have been designed to protect the humans and are thus not burdensome to follow. As Mathew 11:29 points out: ââ¬Å"Take my yoke upon YOU and learn from me, for I am mild-tempered and lowly in heart, and YOU will find refreshment for YOUR souls. For my yoke is kindly and my load is light. â⬠This particular verse from the Bible supports the f act that although God himself has set the guidelines for his followers to obey and use as protection for their own selves if they do intend to follow the rules set for them. All these guidelines are particularly designed to assist the true Christians in living a fine a life in line with the laws of righteousness without being deeply hardened like as if they are forced to follow a certain set of rules. IV. The Eras of Exile The Israelites who were not able to follow the commandments set for them to follow fell into temptation of sinning against the true God. Exile is the expulsion from oneââ¬â¢s own native land or home by authoritative decree; literally in Hebrew, ââ¬Å"a departing. â⬠Cain, who killed his brother Abel, was cursed in banishment from the ground to become a wanderer and a fugitive in the earth. He had been a farmer, but the ground thereafter would not respond to his cultivation. (Inspired by The Holy Scriptures, 1994, 25) In the same term, the Israelites lost th eir given privilege in a way that they were not able to follow the simple commandments of God to them written in His covenant with them. As a result, they were exiled to Babylon and became slaves in a foreign land. It was an assured result portraying the fact that God left their side because of their failure. This is a rightful way of reminding Godââ¬â¢s people of their responsibilities as his so called sworn nation.Later on, they were returned back to Jerusalem with a new hope of renewing their faith and their belief in the Holy God, their Father, and Their Creator whom they owed their lives from. From this particular historical account, it could be noted that the Christians of the present era are reminded to have a strong belief in the truth and a strong conviction that following the commandments of God outlined for them in the Bible gives them the benefits that they need to be able to lead a successful way of living.V. The Gospels The Messiahââ¬â¢s coming forth paved way to the refurnishing of the existing Mosaic Law of which the early Christians followed as per given by God himself to protect them from the different effects of a lawless society. The Gospels were set by Christ when he arrived on earth and began to preach the good news to the people of Galilee and other places nearby. He went into places leading his twelve apostles to help people understand the laws of God in a more practical way.HE too set an example for his true followers to copy when he has already gone back to heaven as the right hand of his father. As Mathew 24:19-4 reads: ââ¬Å"Then people will deliver YOU up to tribulation and will kill YOU, and YOU will be objects of hatred by all the nations on account of my name. Then, also, many will be stumbled and will betray one another and will hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and mislead many; and because of the increasing of lawlessness the love of the greater number will cool off. But he that has endured to the en d is the one that will be saved. And this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will comeâ⬠Particularly, the Bible aims to help the people around the world realize that one way of copying Jesusââ¬â¢ examples as the giver of life and provider of safety for the ones who trust in him and his principles in living is to help others understand his gospels and the beautiful message about the hope that God gave to mankind regarding a bright future through preaching to them what one has learned for studying the Holy Scriptures. VI.The Missions Aside form the mission of preaching the good news to others that Christ has primarily left his followers with upon returning to heaven, there are two major commandments that needs to be fulfilled by true Christians today. The Bible further says: Let [YOUR] love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is wicked, cling to what is good. In brotherly love have tender affecti on for one another. In showing honor to one another take the lead. (Romans 12:10) ââ¬Å"He said to him: ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËYou must love your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind.ââ¬â¢ This is the greatest and first commandment. The second, like it, is this, ââ¬ËYou must love your neighbor as yourself. ââ¬â¢ On these two commandments the whole Law hangs, and the Prophets. â⬠(Mathew 22:37-39) The two major Bible verses cited herein could be noted to have a focus upon the major missions of the true Christians of the present generation of humans. It could be noted that the main point is to inculcate love within the relationships that they establish with others and especially with God.From this point, it should be concluded that the importance of being able to understand this missions and fulfill them in actual application is indeed an essential part of pleasing the Creator of all things. VII. The Church The church is the institution tha t God has placed in assistance to his modern day followers. His holy spirit passes through his appointed ones, whereas he himself leads them carefully in providing the modern day Christian flock with the ample spiritual nutrition that they need to be able to survive the challenges of the world. For this reason, the church has been appointed to be on top of the list of providers of the ample guidance needed by Christians in understanding the Biblical explanations as well as the principles that are outlined for them to follow. From this explanation, it should be certain to modern Christians that religion and the church itself indeed sets the ground for an individual in being able to identify the requirements of God from them as His faithful followers.

The Movie Crash
In the movie, Crash, nearly any racism and discrimination you can think of are shown. In all of these the core problems are lack of civil liberties, rights, social justice, and prejudices from people. This movie did a great job of showing what goes on in certain societies. The main races shown as minorities and being treated wrong were African Americans, Hispanics, and Persians/Asians. Civil rights are defined as, ââ¬Å"The rights of citizens to political and social freedom and equality. â⬠Civil liberties are defined as, ââ¬Å"Guarantees of the safety of persons, opinions, and property from the arbitrary acts of government. Social justices are defined as, ââ¬Å"The application of the concept of justice on a social scale. â⬠Prejudices are defined as, ââ¬Å"An unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason. â⬠All four of these are heavily shown in Crash. It is unfortunate that these things happen to people, but it is impo rtant to know they do happen and to not treat people like this. African American rights have been a struggle throughout our history, and probably always will be. A major landmark in our process to equality was the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It was an Act in the United States that outlawed some forms of discrimination against African Americans. This act outlawed the segregation of schools, work places, and public areas. It also outlawed unequal voting laws. In the movie, African American discrimination was shown a lot. A scene with car-jacking involving African Americans showed the way that many people view the entire race to behave. There were also scenes with racial profiling and even being ignored at a restaurant. One of the worse scenes showing the discrimination and total loss of equality and rights to all races was a scene where a white police officer pulled over an African American couple for not good reason and proceeded to take full advantage of his situation. He sexually assaulted the woman because he knew they would not report him, seeing that they were a minority. It was really sad to see that the husband had to just watch and couldnââ¬â¢t do anything and Iââ¬â¢m sure this sort of thing has really happened before. This is not social justice, and is a lack of both civil rights and liberties. No one should feel like they cannot report a crime because they are the minority in the situation. A real case involving African Americans is Lloyd Gaines, who was denied from a law school in Mississippi because he was black. When taken to Supreme Court, Gaines won the case. This is good news and a step in the right direction. African Americans are discriminated against a lot, as shown in the movie. Hispanics are another group largely discriminated on. The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1968 was an Act that did not help our equal rights progress through the years. In the movie, we see problems that occur today in the United States dealing with Hispanics. I think that Hispanics are the group most prejudiced against today. In one scene, a white rich woman is getting her locks changed by a company. When the lock changer showed up, she completely stereotyped him noticing his tattoos and baggy clothing. The women did not trust the work of the Hispanic man and wanted the company to re-do the locks. Another scene shows a women disrespecting her Hispanic housekeeper and treating her with no equality. She is rude to the housekeeper and treats her as a minority. The last scene about Hispanics that stood out to me was the scene where the lock worker showed up to change the Persian manââ¬â¢s shopââ¬â¢s locks. When the Hispanic man nicely tries to explain to the man that the door is broken he immediately things the Hispanic man is cheating him. The Persian man was very rude, and was yelling at the worker. Even though the Persian man is later discriminated on, it is no reason to have such a strong prejudice on a man just trying to do his job. In the movie, I didnââ¬â¢t really see any crimes committed to Hispanic people, I definitely saw social injustice but no specific crimes done to them. I think Hispanic discrimination is still a really big problem today and everyone has so many stereotypes for everyone. The last groups of people shown being discriminated against were the Persians, and Asians. Some history behind these groups was the Chinese Immigration Act if 1885. This Act gave a big tax to all Chinese Immigrants in the United States. Today, Iââ¬â¢d like to think there is less discrimination on Asians. In one scene, the Persian shop owner wants to buy a gun. The man selling the gun refuses to sell the Persian man because his English is broken. His daughter talks to the man selling the gun and ends up succeeding and purchasing it. It is illegal to not sell a product to someone because of a prejudice view or racial profile. In the end of the movie, we learn that the Chinese man who was ran over by the African Americans was actually selling people of his own race out of his truck for money. This sort of shows that discrimination and lack equality has gotten so bad that even same-race people are doing whatever they can to survive in this Country. African Americans, Hispanics, Persians, and Chinese are all shown being racially profiled, prejudiced, and treated far from equal. None of this, by law, should be happening. It is impossible to control all people all the time, but I think too much of this is happening everyday. In the United States, certain laws are promised and should be completely followed through. It is sad to see all of this discrimination in the movie, but it is good to know it happens so that we can stop it as much as possible, and make more equality for every citizen, no matter their race. The United States has done many good things to put the Country on the right track towards equality, but still decimation exists, and to every race and minority. The monetary and fiscal policy implemented in the United States during Essay
The monetary and fiscal policy implemented in the United States during the Great Recession and determine the short run and long - Essay Example These subjects affect all players in the economy. In addition, some concepts will be explored and discussed in relation with the depression. II. Crowding Out The concept of crowding out pertains to the increase in government borrowing leading to reduction in consumption and investments (Blanchard, 2008). When the government decides to bolster spending, the best ways to raise funds are increased taxes and borrowing. In periods when depression is imminent, raising taxes is not a practical strategy. Government will have a hard time convincing the labour force to pay more taxes when community prices continue to rise and jobs become hard to maintain. The logical approach for the government to raise funds is to borrow through treasury bills, sovereign bonds and loans. The proceeds from these activities can used to pump the economy and stabilise spending among all entities. The immediate impact of crowding out can be observed in the investments. When the government borrows, there is a possi bility that the interest rates will increase. As interest rates go up, the capacity of private investors to borrow decreases. High interest rates discourage investors to venture in activities that require massive funding. Aside from increasing the interest rate, government borrowing also create problems for companies to borrow from other channels. For instance, when a sovereign bond and a corporate bond are floated debt investors will have to decide which investment would sense (Blanchard, 2008). Governments compete with companies for funds and such hampers any expansion firms have in their pipeline. Some economists would argue that government borrowing is critical during times of depression. The inability of the private sector to sustain growth creates problems for the government (Spencer and Yohe, 1970). Long-term effects of crowding out appear to be beneficial in many ways. More funds in the public sector means spending for infrastructure and other aspects that could aid business es. Also, the government could start handing out jobs to individuals affected by companies filing for bankruptcy and downsizing firms. When used the right way, government borrowing can fuel lagging economies and facilitate the revival of private investments and consumption. III. Ricardian Equivalence Theory The main proponents of the Ricardian Equivalence theory suggest that consumer will not change even if the government decides to increase taxes. The theory also states that the method in which governments finance their spending has to impact on the overall demand in the market (Barro, 1979). In times of recession and even especially during depression, governments are pressured to spend more. Since businesses start to slow down and consumer spending could also lag, revenue from taxes is expected to be reduced. To cover for the possible budget deficit governments could resort to borrow from available channels. Even if the borrowings will continue to rise, the level of consumption an d overall demand will remain the same. According to Buchanan (1976), however, there are several aspects that were not considered when the theory was formulated. There is a difference in perspectives when dealing with borrowing and raising taxes. In addition, the promoters of the theory failed to recognise the varying opinion of the consumers when taxes are increased. Some households value their savings and considered their extra assets as insurance for their familiesââ¬â¢

Did humans migrate to the new world from europe in early prehistoric Essay - 1
Did humans migrate to the new world from europe in early prehistoric times - Essay Example However, Curry cited that the discovery of the prehistoric and hypothetically pre-Clovis, mastodon fossils in Washington spur debate concerning the actual manner of human migration from Europe to America. Specifically, existing debates focus on the theories of Bradley and Stanford and Straus. In studying the fossils found both in Alaska and Siberia, Bradley and Stanford assert the existence of pre-Clovis culture in America (465). Further, with their radiocarbon fossil dating technologies, Bradley and Stanford unearthed evidences that link the fossils in pre-Clovis North America with the fossils of the Solutrean culture residing in Spain and France 17,000-21,000 years in the past (466). The fossils, particularly the hunting technologies, show significant similarities, regardless of the fact that the Clovis technology appears more advanced and a few radiocarbon years older than its Solutrean counterparts. Relatively, the Clovis culture may be considered predecessors of the Solutrean culture, considering the similarities of their hunting tools. With those findings, Bradley and Stanford went on to propose that Solutrean may have traveled from Europe to America through ice bridges near the Arctic, although remaining close to the coast to ensure sustainable, marine food source s. The proposition relies heavily on the existence of steppe tundra vegetations during the Last Glacial Maximum wherein ice formed as land bridges connecting the continents. Although Bradley and Stanford succeeded in nulling the theory supporting the Clovis culture as the first American inhabitants, Straus argues that the theory still lack evidences supporting the existence of Solutrean culture in North America before the Clovis culture. Specifically, in studying the drawings and artistic works in Cosquer Cave, Straus found out that the Solutrean culture was purged approximately 18,000 radiocarbon years ago (223). Further, Strauss asserts that the similarities in the

Contemporary issues in managing human resources Essay - 1
Contemporary issues in managing human resources - Essay Example As averred by Ferris, et al. (1999), ââ¬Å"driven by a number of significant internal and external environmental forces, HRM has progressed from a largely maintenance function, with little if any bottom line impact, to what many scholars and practitioners today regard as the source of sustained competitive advantage for organizations operating in a global economyâ⬠(p. 385). Further, contemporary HRM issues include the more qualified term using strategic HRM as establishing the link towards monitoring the quality of employee performance. Another pervading concern of global organizations is the option for downsizing, specifically when external environmental pressures and competitive factors impinge on the decision-making process, to ensure survival and continued production and operation. In this regard, the current research aims to proffer issues in contemporary HRM, particularly focusing on downsizing. The objective is planned to be attained by initially defining relevant terms , such as HRM, strategic HRM, and downsizing. A concluding portion would highlight the significant issues discussed as supported by various authoritative sources from academic journals on the subject of HRM. Definition of Terms An examination of various definitions of HRM by authors, academicians, and management practitioners, shows more common elements than disparate concepts. After synthesizing these elements, the following definition is arrived at: HRM is the art and science of acquiring, motivating, maintaining, and developing people in their jobs in light of their personal, professional and technical knowledge, skills, potentials, needs and values and in synchronization with the achievement of individual, organization and societyââ¬â¢s goals. HRM deals only with people so that they can manage the other resources within their domain of responsibilities more effectively. On the other hand, strategic human resources management (SHRM) is defined by Boxall and Purcell (2003) as à ¢â¬Å"concerned with explaining how HRM influences organisational performance. They also point out that strategy is not the same as strategic plans. Strategic planning is the formal process that takes place, usually in larger organisations, defining how things will be done. However strategy exists in all organisations even though it may not be written down and articulated. It defines the organisationââ¬â¢s behaviour and how it tries to cope with its environment.â⬠Authors Boxall and Purcell examined the interrelationships and extent by which organizational goals are achieved and influenced by HRM. They differentiated HRM from SHRM by indicating that ââ¬Å"HRM was defined as including ââ¬Å"anything and everything associated with management of employment relations in the firmâ⬠(Boxall & Purcell, 2000, p. 184). The theoretical basis for the inclusion of the word strategic to HRM was detailed using a review of various literatures from scholars on the subject. Boxall and Purcell finally averred at this definition of SHRM as ââ¬Å"concerned with the strategic choices associated with the use of labour in firms and with explaining why some firms manage them more effectively than othersâ⬠(2000, p. 185). According to Miller (2001), ââ¬Å"HRM could not be conceptualized as a stand-alone corporate issueâ⬠(p. 348). The inclusion of strategy was regarded as a necessary addition to incorporate marketing efforts to gain competitive advantage with effective use of the

Employment Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 2
Employment Law - Essay Example Accidents and disease are the leading causes of disability and they are the major contributors to work related problems. Disability has been identified as a major cause of discrimination in the work place, and not only in the United States (US) but all over the world. Denial of employment opportunities on the basis of disability is a major cause for concern which led to the formulation of various legislations to protect employment opportunities for the disabled. This falls under various anti-discrimination laws that were instigated by the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This act set the precedent for the formulation of various laws that protect individuals against discrimination based on disability, gender and a myriad of other factors that are causes of discrimination in the work place. This paper seeks to highlight, through the IRAC (Issue, Rule, Application and Conclusion) method of analysis, discrimination in the work place presented by two separate cases. Issue: John worked for XYZ Mo tor Company for 10 years before he developed a back problem that led to surgery to deal with the problem and relieve his pain. The company allows for a 30 day sick leave, which in Johnââ¬â¢s case proved to be an inadequate period for him to fully recover. He was forced by circumstances to return to work before fully getting healed to avoid the risk of being fired. His request for additional days off as recommended by his doctor was denied by his supervisor, which contributed to the deterioration of his back problem, work quantity and quality. Barry who is Johnââ¬â¢s supervisor taunts John and encourages other employees to treatment him badly because of his condition. This ultimately leads to the breakdown of Johnââ¬â¢s morale and he misses work for three consecutive days, which causes his firing under the companyââ¬â¢s attendance policy. John has been fired from his job for three consecutive days of absenteeism at work, an issue that was instigated the treatment he got f rom the work place due to his condition. This leads to the question of whether Johnââ¬â¢s treatment at his work place was lawful, and whether there are laws that protect individuals from such circumstances. Rule: The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is a US government agency that is tasked with enforcing federal employment discrimination laws. The EEOC enforces laws that are meant to protect individuals from discrimination based on gender, disability, sex, national origin, religion, age, race and color(Rothstein & Liebman 78). Disability discrimination in the work place occurs when the employer or other entities as covered by the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) treats a qualified candidate who is an employee or job applicant unfavorably because of their disability. The Law requires that an employer provide appropriate and reasonable accommodation to an employee or job applicant as long as it does not cause significant difficulty or expense for the employer (Roth stein & Liebman 48). The law also forbids discrimination in any aspect of employment that includes firing, hiring, pay, promotions, layoff, training, fringe benefits and job assignments. The disability discrimination and harassment law makes it illegal for some one to be subjected to severe offensive remarks due to their disability that creates a hostile work environment leading to adverse employment decisions like being fired and demotion (Rothstein & Liebman 58). Johnââ¬â¢s case presents a case where multiple laws were broken according to the legislations that are enforced by the EEOC and the rights that fall under the ADA. Application: Barry who was Johnââ¬â¢s supervisor represented the XYZ Motor Company and its policies, which means that the company as a whole should bear the responsibility of the

Network Security Ph.D. - Essay Example The weekly assignment, which covered various security-related topics, necessitated that we, as students, research the assigned topics, engaged with the material and, importantly, explore the multi-dimensional nature of network security. Added to that, weekly feedback on assignments offered us a clear indication of the topics which we could handle well and those which we could not. Following a review of the weekly assignments and the identification of the topics which I could write a good extended research on, I decided that threat identification and confrontation was an interesting topic. It was, however, too general and accordingly, I sought the advice of our Chief information Security Officer who directed me towards state of the art threat identification and mitigation technologies as a possible topic. The primary aim of this research is the examination of the technologies currently employed for the detection of a worm attack and its subsequent negation. Through this examination, the research will illustrate that by taking existing honeypot technologies and using them to populate unused IP space on a network, a honeywall could use these honeypots as sensors to detect and respond to unauthorized traffic. In order to respond to the research question, an in-depth investigative exploration of the network attacks and the technologies for dealing with them was conducted. The research was limited to secondary data and all sources were checked for credibility. Part II: Background 2.0 Introduction An understanding of the nature and types of attacks seen on the network is established first. Following the classification of attacks, a profile of an attacker is presented to provide a more substantial example of network intrusions. A discussion of firewalls, intrusion detection, and honeypots is provided to complete the background information. 2.1 Network Activity Lyle (1997) posits that most attacks fall within one of three main categories: attacks on integrity, attacks on confidentiality or attacks on availability. The act of maintaining the integrity of a network is the act of preventing authorized users of the system from making changes beyond their authority, and to prevent unauthorized persons from making changes at all. If the integrity of a

Rising seas - Essay Example Currently, the trend of this rise has increased, compared to the past years. Beginning 1850, sea levels rose at a high rate because of high industrialization experienced during this period, which led to increase of greenhouse gas emissions. Scientific predictions show that global temperatures will continue to increase in future, thus further rise in sea levels (Milliman and Haq 11). The adverse effect of this phenomenon is that coastal towns, docks, and piers may be submerged if this trend continues. In addition, an increase in wave energy may be experienced. Therefore, a response to address this situation is imperative to avert the looming adversity. There are different ways in which this situation can be solved. However, preventing further global warming will serve to stop the rise in sea level. Nonetheless, the solutions require the expertise of engineers, including soft-engineering processes and hard-engineering processes. Since this problem is already here with us, the solutions will aim at controlling the risen sea level. However, prevention strategies may as well be employed to reduce global warming, which is core in this situation (Pilkey and Young 137-139). Directing seawater to different areas such as depressions, which are below sea level, will help to lower sea level. This could be achieved by digging canals directed to these depressions, where the seawater will drain. Most of depressions in the world have a higher rate of evaporation than other areas. Therefore, this is advantageous, as the seawater will be drained into these depressions continuously without filling up fast, due to the high evaporation (Milliman and Haq 11). By redirecting rivers and streams either partially or completely to drain their waters in a different place will also reduce the sea level, as the water draining into the oceans will be lower. The development of massive reservoirs for rivers and streams to drain in is costly but achievable. Alternatively, the rivers and streams

Quality in Service Organisations (Organisational Management) Essay
Quality in Service Organisations (Organisational Management) - Essay Example It is based on the total experience of the customer with the organization including all levels and categories of staff and its systems. It is based on the customerââ¬â¢s perceptions of the organizational values, briefs and guiding principles. In case of products, it involves not only meeting the customer needs but also a commitment to make the customer successful in his field of operations and give him a feeling of joy and happiness in dealing with the supplier. For internal customers, it provides for satisfaction between departments based on the agreement on coordinated measures to be taken for up gradation f quality. In short, it focuses on all functions and emphasis that total quality is a company wide effort to improve all departments. What did not seem obvious in first instance, is that quality is not always about big improvements. It is the focus on little things that matter in service. Elephants donââ¬â¢t bite; it is the black flies that get us (Ahluwalia, 2003). Chickeeduck was established in 1990. The company at its inception recognized the need for quality childrenââ¬â¢s wear at a reasonable price and set about to fill that niche in the market. Chickeeduck markets a full range of childrenââ¬â¢s wear and accessories catering for new born babies, toddlers and children up to 14 years old, covering such items as basic t-shirts, sweaters, outerwear, underwear, gloves, bibs, baby blankets and baby sleeping bags ( Chickeeduck, PDF). Chickeeduck is Hong Kongââ¬â¢s biggest independent childrenââ¬â¢s retailer operating 25 shops in the most prestigious shopping malls in triple A locations. Chickeeduck has a long association with regional centres having operated outlets in Singapore and Indonesia for some years. More recently the company has expanded both through its own outlets and franchises into Korea, Saudi Arabia, Macau and potentially its biggest market China, increasing its total number

Nursing - Assignment Example Nursesââ¬â¢ burnout jeopardizes nursing practice because it interferes with the normal effectiveness with which nurses offer care to patients. In this regard, nurses fail to fulfill their obligations. Patients have legal rights to sufficient health care regardless of their social, economic or political status (Snyder & Weiner 2005). When nurses fail to fulfill their obligations as outlined by both the law and the nursing codes of ethics, then a legal liability is due. Patients who are not satisfied with the way nurses handle their cases are entitled to legal processes that are tailored towards pursuing the matter further. Jaded nurses should take their time to re-evaluate their suitability in the profession. This does not imply that the nurses should provide health care services in perfect condition. It is obvious that different professions are characteristic of stress related to work. However, nursing practices requires that nurses be in a position to manage their personal challenges in the work place. A nurse under burnout experiences deteriorated personal welfare. Extending this factor to the patients may constitute quitting the profession all together. Burnout is also associa ted with an attitude notion that may not go down well with colleagues and the entire workforce in general. Patientsââ¬â¢ satisfaction and safety is jeopardized in the process (Snyder & Weiner 2005). Patients need to be fully informed on how to manage their medications and care. Doctors who fail to fully inform patients about this face both ethical and legal risks. Doctors are socially and legally obliged to serve the patientââ¬â¢s interests prior to the special knowledge they possess. Medical relationship between the patient and the doctor should be open and either party should provide as much information as possible to the other. Each party should act in respect to the other, such that both fulfill what they are required to. Whatever the health complication is, the doctor should be

The Presence of Fear in Lord of the Flies Essay Example for Free
The Presence of Fear in Lord of the Flies Essay The presence of fear in Lord of the Flies Lord of the Flies is a relatively short book, but within its small amount of text William Golding is able to do much more than tell an exciting story. He digs deep into human nature and the natural corruption in peoples souls. He specifically explores the impact that fear has on people and how it makes them act. In Goldings eyes, humans are doomed just as the children on the island are, and that is because of fear. He believes that just the presence of terror causes people to overreact and lose common sense, tearing away at the bonds that hold society together. In an attempt to calm or soothe their worries, people end up separating, singling out others and letting their inner savage take over, leaving themselves in an even worse situation. In Lord of the Flies, fear slowly drives all common sense and civility out of the boys and brings them back to a state of savagery. The boys are scared from the beginning of the novel. At first, they are too excited about having an island to themselves to dwell upon their insecurities, but nonetheless they are there. The fear is not openly shown or discussed, but the boys are already subconsciously trying to cover it up. The boys do such things such as singling out Piggy in an attempt to make themselves feel more powerful and in control. Then, Jack pulls a knife on the piglet to try to show power and also to try to show immunity to fear, however, when he did so his face was white under the freckles. (31). Jack is already trying to act tough but at this point this cover that he puts on to hide from the fear has not reached nearly the point of savagery that it does later in the story. It is not until the first fire that the boys begin to openly show fear and even then they quickly change the subject. The cause of this realization of reality is that one of the littleuns disappears. The idea of making a rescue fire is so exciting that they let it get out of control. When the fire burns out they realize that one of the children is missing. When asked what has happened to the child with the mark on his face Ralph replies by saying Perhaps he went back to the, the-. . He knows what has happened, the boy was burned to death, but he does not want to admit it. This is like a wakeup call for the boys and they start to see the reality and the dangers of the situation. As the novel continues the fear is progressively growing in all of the children. By page 59, the fear of not knowing what would happen to them and if they would ever be rescued had grown to the point where the littleuns suffered from untold terrors in the dark and they huddled together for comfort. The littleuns were certainly afraid but had no way to really explain their fear or anything to blame it on. It is for this reason that they subconsciously create the beast. At first the biguns are too old and mature to believe in this beast. They realize that it is a figment of the littleuns imaginations and dont give it much thought. However, as their fear of being alone and not being rescued grows, so does their need for something concrete to aim their insecurities toward and to distract them from their real problem. This causes the biguns to begin to lose their common sense and to believe in the beast as well. Simon sees this, but when he tells the others maybe its only us, (89) referring to the beast; he is laughed off. The other boys will not even consider Simons ideas because they have convinced themselves that the beast is reality. As their fear grows so does their image of the beast, and unfortunately their savagery grows as well. This is most evident in Jack. When he is hunting he feels powerful. He is in control and he loves it. Hunting starts to become more than just a food source, it becomes his life. Not only does his hunting activity increase in frequency, it also becomes more and more vicious.

Evaluating the styles of leadership
Evaluating the styles of leadership In operation of an organization, leadership styles of the leader have significant influence to the efficiency and quality of work done. When leaders demonstrate an effective and consistent leadership style, he could easily encourage his subordinates to do better to achieve better results. Therefore, in the first part of this report, we will consider about different leadership styles of Mark and Forgan, through which we can easily see the influence and impact that the different leadership styles can create over the activities of the organization. The leadership theories and evaluate the styles of leadership Leadership style strongly affects on how people work, how the company achieves the delegated goals and how people are willing to dedicate their experience, knowledge and passion for the company. There are many dimensions to leadership and many possible ways to build up the best leadership style. But the first way is to learn and then, cleverly apply in the practical situation of the company. A leader should have the ability as well as behavior. They must understand the role and its mission not only to the group, both the company and themselves. For work, leaders need to know to select the qualified members, and then take measures to encourage them to work efficiently. The working group is inevitable conflicts will occur so the task of a leader is to know how to keep peace between group members. Clarify the issues to find solutions. Role for task of managing is encouraging and look for information about the groups task then diagnostic solutions, the opportunities, threats when perform ing this task.Next followed by consultation with other members. The last one is evaluation to choice the best method to solve this task. For individual, the leaders also need to achieve their own goals for personal development. Then get feedback from others about the strengths and weakness, counseling you and drawing on experience as well as goals to training. There is also a contingency approach to leadership. A contingency approach to leadership is mention about the ability to lead influence others of leaders. This ability is influence by these factors: Personality, leadership style and leader position of the leader. The abilities, experiences and preference of leadership style of subordinates The requirements and level of complication of tasks. Effectively communicate visions, goals and values to colleagues and promote understanding of how delegated objectives support these. A vision is an idealized picture of the future organization and it expresses the organizations reason for existence. Visions grab people and then bring them into the fold. When a leaders vision is effective and strong, employees and stakeholders get caught up in what they are doing, absorb the vision, and commit themselves to the goals and the values of the leaders. The roles leadership is importance who influences the others to contribute voluntarily to the achievement of group task in given situation. They is to direct the group toward their goals .In currently, they set up a vision, goals, object, task for group. In currently, leadership set up goals for group. According to Mark and Forgan, we can conclude the objective and vision of Mark and Forgan for the team operation as follow: Vision: As the company prepares to launch a large scale state of the art residential apartment block, help team members develop their own capabilities. Goal: the goal to achieve sales of eighty percent of the units available, trying to finish the job finished on time. Value: Mark summoned the team to his office for a big dressing down for failing to hit the target. Never once did he commend them for their effort, for braving the weather, for going without food. How Mark and Forgan promotes understanding of how delegated objectives support the vision, goals values Objectives are the elements which can decide the organization to be or not to be. Objectives play a supreme important role in managing and making an organization profitable. Its like a lighthouse which tells the company where to go and if we dont know where we are going, then the company cannot develop. Pre-set objectives provide a basis for planning and management control related to the activities of the organization. When objectives have been set, emphasized and stated clearly, then its communicated to all members of the company. Objectives at different levels within the company contribute to alternatives for decision-making. If the goal to achieve sales of eighty percent of the units available, then the team leader will analyzed his team to know what his teams strengths are and what his teams weaknesses are. Then he will understand the situation of his team and find out the solutions for achieving the objectives. When he understands every detail of his team, he will communicate to his people better, letting them understand the goals, vision and values of the company. Then team members will be aware of their tasks and responsibilities. Pre-set objectives provide guidelines for the team leader in decision-making and justification for actions taken. They help to develop commitment of individuals and groups to the activities of the organization. They focus attention on purposeful behavior and provide a basis for motivation and reward systems. Enthuse and motivate colleagues to achieve objectives Motivated employees help organizations survive. Motivated employees are more productive. To be effective, managers need to understand what motivates employees within the context of the roles they perform. In a team, the leader has to understand employee motivation and motivation theories to carry out the relevant methods to motivate their team members. The motivation methods of team leaders are part of motivation culture of the company. Efforts of staff will help a company attain their goals and objectives, the individual employees also have objectives in their life and it is different from the companies objectives, it means that the staff must be motivated to satisfy their objectives which effect to the companies goal. There are four forms of power that companies of Forgan anh Mark can use to motivate staffs by empowering them: Information: giving the information for staffs so that they can change their way of doing things. The next thing is: empowering them, the motivation for the change would be intrinsic and the decision is made independently. Expertise: this demonstrates how to perform a task. The staffs see the task and decide whether he is able to do the task or not. Personality: the staffs will change in behaviour when they hear the request from the leader, it is intrinsically motivated, and the staff is independent of the leader. Moral power: the leader has communicated a shared set of values and obligations for staffs. These values can be a mission statement or vision. (Course Book, p.109, 110) Promote confidence among colleagues to engage with change The change is necessary if that organization does not operate efficiently. When the organization should adjusts to fit environmental context. If not changed, they will not work properly with the old method again. To promote confidence among colleagues, Mark and Forgan should pay attention on how to prepare a effective team because the an effective team will affect well to work performance, decision-making, cohesiveness among members and so on, The effects will help promote the confidence among colleagues. Mark and Forgan should focus on the issues below involve increasing cohesiveness among members within on the team to they can be more confident when having changes within the organization. Clear objective and agreed goal: that means Mark and Forgan should give the members within a team a specific quantitative goals and objectives, such as, required level of performances, the deadline for the competing the work and so on. It will effective to the members behaviour upon the works. It will effect to the member effort for doing required works. Beside, the members will be lack of vagueness in getting requirement and quality of work, so the members will feel more confident when they work, and the belief of members to the company will be improve Openness and confrontation: Mark and Forgan should create more opportunities to the members within the team can interact together. It will help for the members can study skill and experiences together, they will develop and improve thanks to the interaction. Therefore, they feel more interested and confident in the work Support and trust: a supportive environment can create more than interest in the team, the members will be more trust upon the success of work, and the support from the superior will help the members prevent many problems such as, missed deadline, weak accountability, cost overrun and so on of which will create the worry when they do the work. appropriate leadership: this relates to members motivation, Project managers who should exchanges and takes the members views into account will create much motivation because the members feel respectably Regular reviews: Mark and Forgan need to know what the members need and they need to provide it. Besides, they should usually observe the members action to can evaluate, praise and reward valuable to their contribution and efforts Individual development: working environment, it is important element that effect to the members confident, if the company have working environment bad, not only the members feel depressed, but also they will feel worried that whether they are until suitable for the changes, Sound inter-group relationship: when individual members within the team become familiar and acquainted then the connection between individual members is easier, they are easy to connect and exchange information together to get good solution to problems. Individual members will be more excited and motivated when they do the taskà [1]à . All the elements above will make the members feel that they work for good company with good environment in which they feel interested in the work and create more opportunities for their the development. Empower colleagues to present their own ideas, develop their own ways of working within agreed boundaries and to provide a lead in their own areas of expertise Empowerment can occur in all organizations and management will empower employees based on the level or degree of their responsibility and authority will provide the employee or group. There are many different levels to empower; it depends on the expertise or experience of each individual. Leaders should choose the right time and empower them in the appropriate areas. Mark and Forgan should believe in their abilities. Everyone has different abilities and if they have the opportunity to express it, it will make them confident to offer their ideas. They are highly competent. When members work together they have team spirit. Mark and Forgan can empower supervisory and management levels in this way can reduce the work of leaders and everyone feels responsible for the job. So, when they are empowered, they are free to make their ideas under the trust of leaders. Mission leaders will be provided directly to employees to make it. it makes self-employed persons in communication with the leaders, they can contact directly with the leaders. It leads to the idea of workers can not go through intermediaries that staff will present ideas in meetings. Employees can decide for them self and feel the flexibility in their work. Mark and Forgan should understand the needs of the people, when empowered; the workers will feel responsible for the job and achieve the g oals of the team. In group, encourage employees to find what they achieved and how they can achieve. They will freely develop new technologies to achieve this goal. Empowerment can bring more success to the team of Mark and Forgan. Moreover, given the right to make the confidence to show that the growth of ideas, creativity, flexibility, understanding of their own region. (Course Book, Working with and leading people, page, 73) Plan or analyse work activities using appropriate objective-setting techniques and processes Target task, goal or standard can be achieved in a reasonable amount of time expected and the resources available. Setting goals it means making plans to do the work: target plan can comply with the objectives of work, standing aims and objectives, outputs or improved targets, the development objectives. Working planning is an importance process which is the tool accomplish target. It helps Mark and Forgans company identify activities and objective. The first steps of planning process identify objective of clearly of company. But in setting up objective process of company, Mark and Forgan shouldnt decide by own ideas that Mark and Forgan should have conference among colleague to share opinion for set up object. Every individual is given targets based on their role and responsibility within the company. Then from those ideas, company set up objective for company. This objective includes desire of company and desire of staffs. The team has to make sure that the predetermined objectives are met at all level (at team level and individual level) Standing aims and objectives: includes quality objectives, issues such as fast and courteous when dealing with customer requirements and quantitative targets so, to have goals, Mark and Forgan need to discuss with employees. In this case, Mark needs some changes in his behavior, and very different styles of leadership. Development goals: The main objective can be divided into team goals and personal goals to try to improve performance and personal skills. Planning will help Mark and Forgan in employee management. Ensure that employees complete its objectives effectively predetermined and ensure the correct time. So, Mark should make a new plan for managing employees so they can promote all of their abilities. Outside the maintenance management plan, Forgan should have personal development goals so that employees can express their abilities. From that, if they understand the responsibilities and duties in their organizations, they can accomplish all the goals of the individual and the aim of the team. The method of setting personal goals and the team will help employees work effectively and encourage staff to work well. Negotiate assignments with colleagues using suitable delegation techniques to motivate and enable colleagues Supervisor negotiate task for staff by delegation techniques. Delegation is a two-way process. Good delegation saves you time, develops you people, grooms a successor, and motivates. Poor delegation will cause you frustration, de-motivates and confuses the other person, and fails to achieve the task or purpose itself. Therefore, they support empower. They are more freedom in work and the right makes decision about resources to achieve goals conveniently. They present easier ideas and do according to own way and own ideas to meet object of company. But in currently, they have more responsibly in their job. Things are motive and enable them to finish task and combine the high performance. Specially, interior decorate need creative themselves and freedom in work with own ways Other things when delegating include: à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ Qualification of subordinate à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ Necessity of employee commitment à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ Expansion of employee capabilities à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ Evidence of shared values and perspectives à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ Sufficient time for delegation Some of the technical delegate suitable for both Mark and Forgan to encourage, enable and duty to negotiate with their colleagues: With Mark With Forgan He needs to determine the time, money, staff, training and resources necessary to complete the task. He can access the current workload of colleagues by reviewing and writing a job description and creating a budget period. He can decide what tasks need to be done and identify colleagues will benefit most from the learning experience. He will clearly describe the assignment, where it fits in the big picture with a colleague who will be responsible for it. He needs to determine the time, money, training and resources necessary to complete the task. When performing this step, Mark and his colleagues will clarify what is needed and that Mark is working in partnership with colleagues to help him success. He will provide feedback and support for his colleagues throughout the process and complete it in on top of the work, while not actually doing it is very important. And he must determine the execution time, so this may be a short-term plans, medium and long term. Besides, it will bring stability in the implementation process. He needs to assess the quality of staff, from which he will select the best person for the job (task), besides; they and their colleagues will need to reach decisions. He needs to better define the resources and support, because it will help and support necessary for employees on the job. Resources will include time, money, staffà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ -Any big changes or small should be exchanged between Forgan and his staff, besides; he had to the objectives of the team set up based on the common goals of their organization. He needs to develop and implement procedures to monitor and support the work of regular employees. The same with Mark, Forgan also need regular feedback on performance and working methods of all employees Review development needs and activities and evaluate the effectiveness of activities In order to become a good leader, we need to have skill in constructing feedback. It will help us expand the options and support the development of colleagues. It not only helps the colleagues realise how effective of their works but also help us understand about the needs and expectations of them as well as their capacities. From there, our colleagues can improve themselves and we can satisfy their needs and expectations. There are 2 kinds of feedback which we can use to review the development needs and activities of each individual or team: Motivational feedback: we use it to reward and reinforce positive behaviours by praising and encouraging what they achieve. The main purpose is about increasing confidence and motivation. Developmental feedback: is given when a particular parts need to improve. This kind is used a lot in schools. It helps colleagues know what competence and knowledge need to increase. For Mark, he must use two on for his team. He must have vision and ability to inspire his team to work for the implementation of that vision. For employees, he should know to encourage them, motivate them their work is good. When tasks are not completed on time, he should be comforted and commended the efforts of his team instead of criticizing them. Besides, he should focus on improving the strategy to fit the employee. Changing working methods is essential to Mark. He must think of the benefits of more staff. For Forgan, he was well Motivation to use feedback. Therefore, his staff works in a good mood. They work becomes faster. However, to achieve the highest efficiency, Forgan should focus on improving understanding and enhance the employees place to work fast and quality. Use suitable methods, with clearly defined and relevant criteria and objectives, to assess the performance of colleagues To evaluate the performance of employees based on clearly defined criteria and the relevant and objective, both Mark and Forgan can use 360 degree feedback. Most of the tools 360-degree feedback was answered by each individual in a personal assessment. That supports each individual to understand the strengths and weaknesses, and to contribute to understanding aspects of their work to professional development. So when using a 360-degree feedback to evaluate the performance of their colleagues, it gives them many positive aspects and many supporters: Provide good feedback from colleagues, who reported the supervisor. This could definitely be an improvement on feedback from a single individual. 360 degree feedback can also be saved (Mark and Forgan) is the time where they can spend less energy to provide feedback as many people involved in the process. Colleague awareness is important and this process helps people understand how other employees view their work. Help colleagues learn how to work more effectively together. Multirater feedback makes colleagues more accountable to each other when they share their knowledge that they will provide input into the effectiveness of each colleague. Each a well-planned process can improve communication and development colleagues. The feedback from a number of individuals in different job functions, discrimination of race, age, sex and so is reduced. Forgan which Mark and execution rate based on our most recent interaction with colleagues is also reduced. Identify factors affecting the quality of performance and use these to provide clear and constructive feedback on performance to colleagues. In an organization there are many factors affecting the quality of work, but I think the main factor affecting the quality of activities including: Management style: the way the administration will work and behave with other employees in his company. A good leader who knows how to give employees the company can fully develop their strengths and create a comfortable working environment and friendly in the process of management. Mark and Forgan if possible to do so, quality will be increased activity. Attitude of members we can see that the attitude of the employees will be affected positively or negatively affected by their work and their behavior at the company and company housing. If an employee has a positive attitude to work, they will create efficiency and quality of work will increase. If an employee has a negative attitude to work, they will create a boring atmosphere in the company, quality of work will be reduced. Therefore, when considering this issue, Mark van to change his attitude to the team. Working environment: the number and quality of implementation will be developed to a high level if the employees in company housing and construction companies working in the best environment. Because each will have different demands on the working environment. Therefore, this requires both Mark and Forgan need to understand and grasp the needs of each member. In this way they can create the appropriate environment for staff and for them to promote all of their advantages. The relationship between the members of the housing companies and construction companies: this is one of the main factors affecting the quality of activities. Because, when working together, the relationship between the members has an important role. + If the relationship between members as well, it will help improve performance quality. + If this relationship difficulties (conflict between members), comments operational quality will be reduced. Consequently, when an opinion on this issue, Forgan has been another success, because he has built good relationships with his team, when working with direct supervision. With Mark, he needs to reassess the relationship with employees, and he should change his views about this relationship. Incorporate results of assessments into personal development plans and other organisational procedures for dealing with performance issues After finishing appraisal process, the manage may complete her report with an overall assessment or the jointly reached conclusion of the interviewer with recommendation for result of appraisal. By assesses potential, potential review is the use of appraisal to forecast where and how fast an individual is progress. They need to ensure that the assessment of their colleagues understood. Besides, they also need to make new plans and strategies to develop appropriate plans for individuals and organizations to carry out procedures for dealing with performance problems of their labor. And then, Mark and Forgan should take the action agreed on the creation and promotion for their employees. When making assessments, both Mark and Forgan should make an assessment of potential for their employees. It includes: Network strength and the weakness in the skills of existing employees and quality. Strategic capabilities and repair, renovation and development. Aspirations and attitudes of employees for career development, staying with the organization and handle responsibility. Opportunities available within the organization, including positions with the ability to manage, shift work, plans and policies to promote wealth for the future. Conclusion After the activity, besides we have enough information for assignment, we have learned and improve about team work. The first thing we learned is good teams has to have a good leader and all members in team have to follow him. This is very important thing. The second thing is we must have good schedule because we also have to the assignment of other subject so if we cannot management time, we will fail all of them. Through this activity, we were practice a lot of theories which we learned in class and we also had more experience in teamwork.

It provides products, technologies, software, solutions and services to consumers, small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and large enterprises, including customers in the government, health and education sectors. HP is the worlds leading PC manufacturer. It specializes in developing and manufacturing computing, data storage, and networking hardware, designing software and delivering services. HP also has strong services and consulting business around its products and partner products. HISTORY:- HP was founded on January 1, 1939 as a manufacturer of test and measurement instruments by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard who graduated with degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1935. The company originated in a garage in nearby Palo Alto during a fellowship they had with a past professor, Frederick Terman at Stanford during the Great Depression. Terman was considered a mentor to them in forming Hewlett-Packard. In 1939, Packard and Hewlett established Hewlett-Packard (HP) in Packards garage with an initial capital investment of US$538. Hewlett and Packard tossed a coin to decide whether the company they founded would be called Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett, Packard won the coin toss but named their manufacturing enterprise the Hewlett-Packard Company. HP incorporated on August 18, 1947, and went public on November 6, 1957. Their first product was a precision audio oscillator, the Model HP200A. Their innovation was the use of a small night-light bulb as a temperature dependent resistor in a critical portion of the circuit. This allowed them to sell the Model 200A for $54.40 when competitors were selling less stable oscillators for over $200. The Model 200 series of generators continued until at least 1972 as the 200AB, still tube-based but improved in design through the years. At 33 years, it was perhaps the longest-selling basic electronic design of all time. One of the companys earliest customers was Walt Disney Productions, which bought eight Model 200B oscillators (at $71.50 each) for use in certifying the Fantasound surround sound systems installed in theaters for the movie Fantasia. OBJECTIVE Primary Objectives:- To find out the attributes that enhance the customer value by providing better service to them and know how to motivate the more people towards IT. The Project required carrying out the comparative study of prices across Brands and Models also to carry out another comparative study of Margins of Dealers and Wholesalers. This would be done by finding out the Market Operating Price at which they are making deals and the volume of discounts offered by them. Then apart from studying the dealers a study of consumer buying behaviors was also required for the specific brands. This was done by making comparative study of HP along with other brands, in terms of consumer preference. Also dealers perspectives about the brand are also to be considered along with this the effect of prices on brand preference of the models. In the research we also tried to study consumer behavior for all the brands and also the dealers perception about the market of Home PCs, Laptops, Printers, PSC, Scanner, and TFT. For this Segmentation, Targeting and Positioning of various brands on recall, believability, association, final purchase. Other Objectives:- à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ To know the brand recall by customers. à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ To know the reason why people prefer HP (Hewlett-Packard) brand. à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ To increase the sales volume. à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ To give the customer satisfaction and also get the references from them. à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ To know which factor is important for customer before buying any IT product. à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ To illicit suggestion for better positioning for HP product. Focus:- The company was originally rather unfocused, working on a wide range of electronic products for industry and even agriculture. Eventually they elected to focus on high-quality electronic test and measurement equipment. Throughout the 1940s to well into the 1990s the company focused on making signal generators, voltmeters, oscilloscopes, counters, and other test equipment. Their distinguishing feature was pushing the limits of measurement range and accuracy. For instance, almost every HP voltmeter or signal generator has one or more extra clicks of its knobs than its competitors. HP voltmeter or ammeters would measure down and up an extra 10 to 100 times the units of other meters. Although there were good reasons why competing meters stopped at 1 volt full scale, HP engineers figured out ways of extending the range of their equipment by a considerable amount. They also focused on extreme accuracy and stability, leading to a wide range of very accurate, precise, and stable frequency co unters, voltmeters, thermometers, and time standards. During the sixties and seventies:- HP is recognized as the symbolic founder of Silicon Valley, although it did not actively investigate semiconductor devices until a few years after the Traitorous Eight had abandoned William Shockley to create Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957. Hewlett-Packards HP Associates division, established around 1960, developed semiconductor devices primarily for internal use. Instruments and calculators were some of the products using these devices. HP is acknowledged by wired magazine as the producer of the worlds first personal computer, in 1968, the Hewlett-Packard 9100A. HP called it a desktop calculator because, as Bill Hewlett said, If we had called it a computer, it would have been rejected by our customers computer gurus because it didnt look like an IBM. We therefore decided to call it a calculator and all such nonsense disappeared. An engineering triumph at the time, the logic circuit was produced without any integrated circuits; the assembly of the CPU having been entirely executed in discrete components. With CRT readout, magnetic card storage, and printer the price was around $5000. The company earned global respect for a variety of products. They introduced the worlds first handheld scientific electronic calculator in 1972 (the HP-35), the first handheld programmable in 1974 (the HP-65), the first alphanumeric, programmable, expandable in 1979 (the HP-41C), and the first symbolic and graphing calculator HP-28C. Like their scientific and business calculators, their oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other measurement instruments have a reputation for sturdiness and usability (the latter products are now part of spin-off Agilents product line). The companys design philosophy in this period was summarized as design for the guy at the next bench. In the eighties and beyond:- In 1984, HP introduced both inkjet and laser printers for the desktop. Along with its scanner product line, these have later been developed into successful multifunction products, the most significant being single-unit printer/scanner/copier/fax machines. The print mechanisms in HPs tremendously popular LaserJet line of laser printers depend almost entirely on Canons components (print engines), which in turn use technology developed by Xerox. HP develops the hardware, firmware, and software that convert data into dots for the mechanism to print. In 1987, the Palo Alto garage where Hewlett and Packard started their business was designated as a California State historical landmark. In the 1990s, HP expanded their computer product line, which initially had been targeted at university, research, and business customers, to reach consumers. Later in the decade HP opened hpshopping.com as an independent subsidiary to sell online, direct to consumers; the store was rebranded HP Home Home Office Store in 2005. HP also grew through acquisitions, buying Apollo Computer in 1989, Convex Computer in 1995, and Compaq in 2002. Compaq itself had bought Tandem Computers in 1997 (which had been started by ex-HP employees), and Digital Equipment Corporation in 1998. Following this strategy HP became a major player in desktops, laptops, and servers for many different markets. Culture followed:- The founders, known to friends and employees alike as Bill and Dave, developed a unique management style that has come to be known as the HP Way. In Bills words, the HP Way is a core ideology . . . [that] includes a deep respect for the individual, a dedication to affordable quality and reliability, a commitment to community responsibility, and a view that the company exists to make technical contributions for the advancement and welfare of humanity. Diversity:- Hewlett-Packard received a 100% rating on the Corporate Equality Index released by the Human Rights Campaign starting in 2003, the second year of the report. In addition, the company was named one of the 100 Best Companies for Working Mothers in 2004 by Working Mothers magazine. Hewlett-Packard is also involved in the NEPAD e-school program to provide all schools in Africa with computers and internet access. Ad campaigns:- Hewlett-Packard has used a number of innovative commercials to sell its products. Like You + HP: digital photography. A television ad campaign for Hewlett-Packards digital photography (titled You + HP: digital photography) has been noted for its simple special effects and choice of music. It won Campaign of the Year from Adweek magazine in 2004. Songs used in You + HP Campaign: à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ Picture Book by The Kinks à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ Out of the Picture by The Robins à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ Pictures of You by The Cure à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ The Rainbow by The Apples in Stereo à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ Across the Universe by The Beatles Acquisitions:- Data Systems, Inc. A small 5-person company called Data Systems, Inc. Owned by a chemical manufacturer, Union Carbide, who failed in their diversification efforts, HP bought the group and this helped to launch the HP 2116A in 1966. A computer designed to automate the collection and processing of data from the companys test and measurement devices, it marked HPs entry into the growing computer industry. Apollo In 1989, HP Acquired Apollo computer for $476 million. HP was able to achieve a growth in market share after the merger; with the market at the time valued at $4.1 billion and the fastest-growing area of the market. VeriFone On April 23, 1997, HP announced plans to acquire VeriFone, the leading provider of card-swipe terminals on retail countertops to approve purchases, in a $1.18 billion stock swap. On May 10, 2001, Gores Technology Group acquired VeriFone from HP. Bluestone On January 18, 2001, HP acquired Bluestone Software, Inc., a leading provider of B2B, B2C, and wireless open platform solutions. Indigo On March 22, 2002, HP acquired Indigo N.V., a leader in digital offset color printing systems. Compaq On May 3, 2002, Hewlett-Packard merged with Compaq Computer Corporation, a controversial move intended to make the company the personal computing leader. The merger opposition was led by Walter Hewlett, son of HP founder William Hewlett. Snapfish On April 15, 2005, HP acquired Snapfish, a leading online photo service based in San Francisco, California, USA. AppIQ In October of 2005, Hewlett-Packard acquired the private company AppIQ (short for Application IQ). The company was founded in 2001 by Ash Ashutosh and David Chang, and offered several digital storage solutions. The company had employed up to 235 people by June 2005. OuterBay On February 7, 2006, HP agreed to acquire OuterBay, a leading provider of archiving software for enterprise applications and databases. OuterBay is headquartered in Cupertino, California, USA, with offices in the US, UK, and India. Silverwire On June 6, 2006, HP announced it was acquiring Silverwire Holding AG, a commercial digital photography solutions and software provider with a strong presence in the retail photo market. Silverwire is headquartered in Zug, Switzerland. Mercury Interactive On July 25, 2006, HP announced plans to acquire Mercury Interactive (MERQ.PK), a company that provides Business Technology Optimization software (i.e. software that helps a company govern, develop and maintain its technology stack). This acquisition is expected to occur in Q4 2006 and will result in an HP software business of around $2 billion. VoodooPC On September 28, 2006, HP announced it will expand its presence in the gaming market by acquiring VoodooPC, a maker of high-performance gaming, luxury, and entertainment PCs based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This acquisition is expected to close by November 2006. Competitors:- Major competitors of HP in the computer business include Apple Computer, Dell, Gateway, Lenovo (Purchased IBMs Non-server Personal Computer Business), Sony and Toshiba. Major competitors of HP in the server business include Sun Microsystems, IBM and Dell. Major competitors of HP in the printer business include Brother, Canon, Epson, Lexmark and Dell (who rebrands and repackages Lexmark products) Outsourcing:- In 1994, HP decided to outsource its manufacturing to third-party vendors and oversea countries to lower costs and raise profits. Today, desktop computers are assembled in Guadalajara, Mexico where HP employs approximately 1,500 workers. Notebook computers are assembled in China from third-party vendors. Servers and workstations are still assembled in the United States. In 2003, HP had 140,000 employees worldwide. Under HPs current restructuring program, HP began reducing its workforce to lower its costs. By 2006, HP experienced a record profit of $1.5 billion in just one quarter. Made for India Marketing:- Brands and Marketing were traditionally dominated by the US, Germany and Japan. In Interbrands global brand scorecard, 14 of the top 20 global brands are US brands (HP is 12 by the way). Consulting firms, advertising agencies and market intelligence companies were primarily based in these countries. Product marketers worked in those three countries; they catered to the local customer needs and created products for those markets that would be then exported with little differentiation to the rest of the world. I was in Bangalore, India recently and I was struck by how much this could become the model of the past. I recommend reading Goldman Sachs excellent economic paper -Dreaming with BRICs: The Path to 2050. The report predicted in 2003 that in less than 40 years, the BRICs economies (Brazil, India, China, Russia) together could be larger than the G6 (top 6 economies in the world) in US dollar terms. By 2025, they could account for over half the size of the G6. Of the current G6, only the US and Japan may be among the six largest economies in US dollar terms in 2050. The recent trends and stats from the BRIC countries indicate that this prediction is accelerating and things may happen sooner. Products will need to be developed specifically for the customer needs in those countries, campaigns will be tailored to local tastes and Marketing will happen increasingly first in those markets and then get exported to the rest of the world, even for US brands. Nokia, which is the only company in the top 20 brands that is not based in any of the three countries, is a great example of this trend (Nokia is based in Finland). Nokia started operations in India in 1995. In 2005, India is among the top 5 markets for Nokia worldwide. Nokia has developed major efforts in adapting its products and advertising to the specificities and tastes of the Indian market: 1998- Indian ringtone 2000- First Hindi User Interface 2002 -First Hindi text input -2003- First Made for India phone (Nokia 1100) 2004 -Hindi SMS campaign 2005 -Local User interface in additional local languages If you consider the forecasts of the Goldman Sachs report, India and China will represent soon 2 of the top 3 markets for most technology products. This will have significant consequences on marketing resource strategies as these markets evolve from low cost offshoring tactics to local strategic marketing talent hiring. This clearly highlights the imperative to re-think the core competencies of US-based Marketing and evolve marketers skills accordingly. Product line of HP:- HP has ventured into various products in different categories. Some of them are as follows 1 Printer:- 5 Desktop computers:- 1.1 LaserJet printers (color and monochrome) 5.1 Compaq Presario Desktop 1.2 ColorJet printers 5.2 HP Pavilion 1.3 Officejet All-in-one printers 1.8 Designjet Printers 6 Plotters 1.9 Deskjet printers 7 Pocket calculators 2 Digital Cameras:- 2.1 Original line 8 Blade Systems 2.2 HP E-series 2.3 HP M-series 9 Personal notebooks 2.4 HP R-series 9.1 Pavilion notebooks 9.2 Compaq Presario 3 Scanners:- 9.3 HP Mini 3.1 Scanjet series 3.2 Film scanners 10 Workstations 4 Mobile phones 11 Servers CONCLUSION The Indian I.T. market currently appears to be at a crossroads, where I.T.marketers are attempting to change the customer perceptions of their brands in the specific buying motivations appear to be replacing generalities. This meanwhile is quite unlike the west where buyers consider, aesthetics, comfort and safety, not necessarily in that order. Before finalizing a purchase. Its smarter to think about emotions and attitudes if marketers are to do a better job of marrying what are HP offers to the consumers image of the offerings. The mindset of the Indian Consumer is such that he is delighted if he buys the pen, a little cheaper than his neighbour. Things are, however, a slowly changing and customers at the upper end of market are now ready pay more for more. I hope that this approach will soon enter the new era, may be not with the same intensity. Success will largely determine to the extent a company can differentiate itself in terms of intangibles that grow with the product. In 1973 HP becomes the first US company to institute the flexible working hours or flex time. Under the program, HP employees can begin work at any time during a two hour period and leave after completing an 8 hrs. workday. The purpose, as explained by Bill, is to gain more time for family leisure, conduct personal business, and avoid traffic jams or to satisfy other individual needs. HP introduces the first electronic calculator to print Japanese characters. The model 9810 desktop calculators are marketed in Japan by Yokogawa Hewlett-Packard.
